Training: Foot Strength

June 19th, 2009

What I have put together for you here is a couple of different videos relating to foot strength. A lot of these videos may strike you as kind of strange because they are not streetball specific. Ive pulled these videos from all over the place but keep an open mind and check it out. Foot strength is a very undervalued part of vertical leaping as well as speed and quickness. And if you are a baller you know that your vertical, speed and quickness are important things. So just hear what these videos have to say, oh yeah and the best part is a lot of these exercises can be done at home on the couch or in front of the computer.

This video explains a little bit about the muscles in the foot and why they are important.

Crossover Drills – Get Your Handles Right

June 8th, 2009

This guys name is Jason Otter. You may be familiar with him already. I find him hilarious to watch, BUT, these drills are highly effective. Dont just look at what he does, think about what he is saying. “Repetition is the key to success”. That goes for anything that is skill based and can be applied to almost any sport. For basketball that goes for dribbling, shooting and passing. Its called ‘muscle memory‘ (if you’ve ever trained with me you’ve probably heard me say this about 1000 times). It basically means that through the use of repetition you are training your body to instinctively do the correct movement every time. We’ll come back to this soon. For now, get your crossover right for the summer season.

John Clark Reppin PGD

May 30th, 2009

This is John Clark aka JC reppin Playground Dynasty. What he is doing at the end of this clip with a weight belt on is crazy. Keep in mind its a weight belt, not ankle weights. There’s a big difference. Training with a weight belt on is OK. Training with ankle weights is asking for trouble.

David Thacker Puttin in Work

April 25th, 2009

Random observations:
1. Dude is only 6′1″ so what he does is definitely worth noticing
2. The “burnouts” he is doing in the jumpsoles can almost as effectively be done with no equipment at all, just stay on your toes. But notice he does 3 sets of 100 3 times a week. This is EXCELLENT advice. If you over do it, it can cause problems.
3. Doing a dunk session like that like that out door on cement deserves a “tip of the hat” and plenty of ice packs aka dont try this at home kids.
